Bright, brash & bold
Doncaster up-and-coming rock star YUNGBLUD has released a new single, ‘Strawberry Lipstick’.
The new song puts his punk influences at the forefront of the song, beginning with some screeching feedback and a scream of “This is a song about someone I love”. This bold intro sets the tone for a song that combines heavy punk rock with a heartfelt love song. Although it didn’t seem like anything could top the roaring triumph of 2018’s 21st Century Liability and last year’s the underrated youth EP, ‘Strawberry Lipstick’ has aggressively made a space for itself among YUNGBLUD’s greatest songs. Although previous single ‘Weird!’ didn’t attract as much attention, his newest release has created the kind of excitement which has really raised fans’ expectations for an upcoming YUNGBLUD project.
Lyrically, the song is rebellious and catchy, with the typically raw lines like “Saying fuck all the oppression and the self doubt / I’m gonna bite all of your fingers, put ’em in my mouth” that we have by now come to expect from the singer. Musically, ‘Strawberry Lipstick’ is gloriously rough around the edges, and when live shows are something that we can look forward to again there is no doubt that it will be a crown jewel in a YUNGBLUD setlist.
The music video is just as monumental – full to the brim with the classic imagery of 1970s British punk paired with YUNGBLUD’s aesthetic power. ‘Strawberry Lipstick’ is a raucous success, and one of the most energetic tracks to emerge from 2020 so far.
YUNGBLUD’s ‘Strawberry Lipstick’ is out now via Locomotion Recordings Limited, under exclusive license to Interscope Records.
